Gikomba market child care initiative is an example of how we can realize inclusive cities for all, through low-cost projects and a thoughtful planning process. The Gikomba Day Care Centre has become a vital resource for mothers working in Kenya's largest second-hand market.
Located in the heart of Gikomba Market, the daycare center provides a safe, nurturing environment for children whose mothers work long hours selling goods in the bustling marketplace. This initiative addresses a critical need in the community, allowing women to earn a living while ensuring their children receive proper care.
The Challenge
Before the establishment of the daycare center, mothers working in Gikomba Market faced difficult choices. Many had to bring their children to work, exposing them to unsafe conditions in the crowded market. Others left their children with neighbors or relatives, often paying a significant portion of their earnings for childcare. Some even had to choose between working and caring for their children, limiting their economic opportunities.
Our Solution
The Gikomba Day Care Centre was established through a collaborative effort between WowMom, local authorities, and community partners. The center provides:
- Safe and clean facilities for children aged 6 months to 5 years
- Nutritious meals and snacks
- Early childhood education activities
- Health monitoring and basic medical care
- Trained caregivers who provide nurturing attention
The center operates during market hours, allowing mothers to work with peace of mind knowing their children are well cared for nearby.
Impact and Recognition
Since its opening, the Gikomba Day Care Centre has served hundreds of children and supported numerous working mothers. The initiative has been recognized by Citizen TV Kenya as a model for urban planning that considers the needs of all community members, including working parents and young children.
The success of this project demonstrates that creating inclusive cities doesn't always require massive infrastructure investments. Sometimes, thoughtful interventions that address specific community needs can have a profound impact on urban livability.
Looking Forward
Building on the success of the Gikomba Day Care Centre, WowMom is exploring opportunities to establish similar facilities in other markets and commercial areas across Kenya. We believe that by addressing the childcare needs of working parents, we can contribute to more inclusive, family-friendly urban environments.
We invite you to support our efforts to create cities where children grow, learn, and thrive, and where parents can pursue economic opportunities without compromising their children's wellbeing.
