Our Founding Story

The journey of how WowMom came to be and why we exist.

Peninah Ndegwa

My name is Peninah Ndegwa, the founder and the managing Director of Wow Mom, a social enterprise that advocates for children friendly cities. In 2017, I was blessed with an amazing daughter Maria who changed my life forever!

Being a full-time worker then in a very demanding job, I went through my share of struggles of working moms. After resuming to work from maternity leave, I found the transition to working motherhood to be pretty overwhelming.

The ideology that I had to be present around the clock both at home and in the office was a mere dream. I felt the pressure to prove to myself, to my husband and to my colleagues that I had it all together, had all the energy and time to work as though nothing had changed.

I struggled with guilt of being a bad mom, unsupportive wife and unproductive worker. The temptation to choose between my career and family creeped in. Post-partum depression followed.

The Journey

1

The Challenge

I knew the only way to get my sanity back is by making this motherhood journey easier and fun. It meant taking the bull by its horn through reading baby and parenting libraries.

2

The Blog

The say motherhood doesn't come with a manual, and I thought WHY NOT CREATE ONE? The Blog was created! It was very successful. I enjoyed sharing weekly blogs, convened groups of moms to learn together on parenting, child nutrition, first aid and most importantly, I met my tribe of women.

3

The Realization

But then, I'm an urban planner! How do I align my professional expertise with this blog? I started experiencing the cities from a caregivers/children perspective and voiced their needs in any platform I would get.
