- Shout and Tap-Shout and gently tap the child on the shoulder. If you know the child’s name, call them by their name. If there is no response and not breathing or not breathing normally, position the baby on her back (face up) and begin CPR.
- Open the airways- You want to ensure that all the airways are open and not blocked. In doing this by tilt lifting the chin. Do not tilt the head too far back.
- Give 30 chest compression- Give 30 gentle chest compressions at the rate of 100-120/minute. Use two fingers in the center of the chest just below the nipples. (DO NOT USE YOUR PALM).Press down firmly but gently as you count.
- Give 2 gentle breaths-This is also known as kiss of life. If the baby is not breathing or not breathing normally, cover the baby's mouth and nose with your mouth and give 2 gentle breaths. Each breath should be 1 second long. You should see the baby's chest rise with each breath. You cover the nose to ensure that the air you blow in through the mouth does not escape through the nose.
- Call 911- I hope you don’t get to this point. If he baby does not respond in the first two minutes, you can request someone to call 911 or request an ambulance as you continue to help the baby.
- Repeat the process- Continue with 30 chest compressions and two breaths until help arrives.
